How long before a corona virus treatment is a availible?

Globally, more than 530,000 had contracted the virus by late March, including more than 85,000 in the U.S. President Donald Trump recently suggested that many of the social distancing measures that are in place to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus may end by Easter.

With COVID-19 cases still rising in the U.S. and many countrie just starting to tighten social distancing measures, is two-and-half-weeks realalistic target date to relax social distancing measures? When it comes to epidemics, this is a red alert, not an orange alert. With no vaccine or proven effective specific treatment for SARS-CoV2 available yet, keeping people physically separate through closing high mixing areas like schools and workplaces and having people stay at home is pretty much all that we’ve got to slow the spread of the virus.

We can slow the spread and lower the amount of cases by staying at home and as few interactions as possible. Theres currently many companies working on a treatment and vaccine for this virus

Officials at the World Health Organization have touted remdesivir as having the most potential to effectively treat coronavirus patients. The WHO has begun clinical tests of the drug on patients in Spain and Norway.”Remdesivir is still an investigational medicine. We are planning for the outcome we all hope for — that it will prove to be a safe, effective treatment — and in the meantime we are taking the ethical, responsible approach to determining whether that is the case,” said Gilead chairman and CEO Daniel O’Day in an open letter released Saturday.Longevity Vision Fund’s Young added that two other medications could be helpful in treating coronavirus as well: the HIV medication Kaletra, which is produced by AbbVIe (ABBV) and is a combination of the antiviral drugs lopinavir and ritonavir; and Kevzara, and a rheumatoid arthritis treatment made by biotech Regeneron (REGN) and European drug titan Sanofi (SNY).

The hope is that one or more of these existing medications will help alleviate the worst symptoms from the coronavirus, buying a little more time for companies developing vaccines to come up with a longer term solution to stop the spread of the disease
